Second Wine of Château Haut-Brion
Château Haut-Brion
Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is the second wine of Château Haut-Brion, a Bordeaux First Growth. Introduced in 2007, it replaced Château Bahans Haut-Brion and is named after Clarence Dillon, who bought Haut-Brion in 1935. Typically containing more Merlot than the Grand Vin, Le Clarence is more approachable young while maintaining Haut-Brion's style. It's made from younger vines and plots not used for the first wine, but with the same exacting standards.
Pessac-Léognan is a prestigious wine appellation located in the Graves region of Bordeaux, France. Established in 1987, it encompasses both red and white wine production, with a particular reputation for high-quality reds. The region's wines are known for their elegance, complexity, and ability to age gracefully, often displaying a unique combination of power and finesse.
Le Clarence shares Haut-Brion's exceptional terroir, consisting of deep gravel beds mixed with sand and clay. This composition ensures excellent drainage and heat retention, forcing deep root growth for complexity. The estate's urban-edge location creates a warmer microclimate, often allowing earlier ripening. While sourced from the same overall terroir as the Grand Vin, Le Clarence typically comes from younger vines or different plots, offering a more accessible expression of Haut-Brion's renowned vineyard sites.
