E. Guigal is one of the most renowned wine producers in the Rhône Valley, France. Founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal, the estate is now run by his son Marcel and grandson Philippe. Based in Ampuis, the heart of the Côte-Rôtie appellation, Guigal has expanded its influence throughout the Rhône Valley over the decades. The estate is known for producing a wide range of wines, from entry-level Côtes du Rhône to some of the most sought-after and expensive wines in the world, including their famous "La La" wines from Côte-Rôtie: La Mouline, La Landonne, and La Turque.
While Guigal is based in the Northern Rhône, specifically in Côte-Rôtie, the estate produces wines from various appellations throughout both the Northern and Southern Rhône. The Northern Rhône is known for its steep, terraced vineyards and its focus on Syrah for red wines and Viognier for whites. Key appellations here include Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, and Saint-Joseph. The Southern Rhône, by contrast, is known for its Mediterranean climate and blended wines, with Châteauneuf-du-Pape being the most famous appellation. Guigal's extensive range allows them to showcase the diverse terroirs and styles of the entire Rhône Valley.
The terroir of Guigal's vineyards varies significantly across their holdings, but their most famous wines come from Côte-Rôtie. This appellation is known for its steep, south-facing slopes that maximize sun exposure in the relatively cool climate. The soils here are primarily schist and granite, contributing to the wines' minerality and structure. Guigal's "La La" vineyards each have distinct terroirs: La Mouline on the Côte Blonde has lighter, more aromatic soils; La Landonne on the Côte Brune has iron-rich soils producing more tannic wines; and La Turque blends characteristics of both. Beyond Côte-Rôtie, Guigal's expansive holdings throughout the Rhône allow them to work with a wide array of soil types and microclimates, from the granite slopes of Hermitage to the famous galets roulés (large pebbles) of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
