Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Vertical (2018-2021)

Sale price$1,035.00 | In Stock Ships from our French cellar (Delivery in 4-10 days) | Drink or Cellar

This vertical showcases four standout Pauillac vintages, highlighting Comtesse de Lalande’s finesse with 2018’s rich dark fruit and polished tannins, 2019’s layered cassis and floral lift, 2020’s dense dark berries and spice, and 2021’s vibrant red fruit and graceful freshness.

Perfect conditions yielded wines of remarkable depth in Pauillac. Complex blackcurrant and cedar emerge on the nose, layered with graphite and violets. The concentrated palate demonstrates extraordinary refinement, where noble tannins support dense fruit.

Pichon Comtesse’s 2019 vintage is a study in elegance and complexity. Aromas of blackberries, cassis, and cedar are accented by floral and graphite notes. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with refined tannins and a long, precise finish that highlights its Pauillac pedigree.

A warm and balanced 2020 vintage in Pauillac resulted in wines of elegance and depth. Château Pichon Comtesse de Lalande offers aromas of blackcurrant, cedar, and violet, with hints of graphite. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with polished tannins and a long, refined finish.

Bright and classically styled, the 2021 Pichon Comtesse delivers purity and precision with layers of red berries, crushed herbs, violet, and graphite. The palate is linear and vibrant, marked by fine tannins and impressive tension. A refined expression of the vintage, emphasizing terroir and elegance over sheer power.

Pure class, the 2019 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse De Lalande is another brilliant wine from director Nicolas Glumineau that checks in at the top of the vintage. A blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc that was harvested from mid-September through October 8th. Brought up in roughly 60% new French oak, it hit 14.1% natural alcohol with a pH of 3.7. More elegant and poised from bottle than barrel, it offers a brilliant perfume of crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, tobacco leaf, damp earth, and graphite. Deep, full-bodied, and pure perfection on the palate, it has this incredible marriage of Latour-like stature and regalness buffered by wonderful, sexy, seamless fruit, which no doubt comes from the higher Merlot content and makes Comtesse de Lalande so singular and unique. It builds slowly with time in the glass and has remarkable purity of fruit, ultra-fine tannins, perfect balance, and a finish that just begs you to pour another glass. It has a seductive, seamless profile that offers pleasure even today (although it needs lots of air to show at its best) yet needs 7-8 years of bottle age to hit the early stages of its prime drink window and will evolve for another 40-50 years if stored properly.

One of the wines of the vintage, the 2019 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande soars from the glass with complex aromas of wild berries, tobacco leaf, loamy soil, burning embers and hints of violets and rose petals. Full-bodied, deep and complete, it’s velvety and seamless, with a broad attack and a multidimensional core of lively, succulent fruit. Concluding with a long, expansive finish, it’s a remarkable young Pauillac that will offer many years of thrilling drinking. Congratulations to Nicolas Glumineau and his team, who are ushering in a new golden age at an address where standards were always very high.

Inky in hue, concentrated and designed for the long-haul, Pichon Comtesse is very backwards in the glass on initial tasting. After five minutes in the glass the wine's characters start to emerge – dark berry fruit, exotic spices, hints of chocolate and some floral notes of violet/rose. The wine is elegant and precise, with all the components in place for two to three decades of ageing. The Baron has the edge at the moment but I suspect Comtesse will win through at the end.

Smooth, seductive and finely textured, this is both sleek and strict, with a savoury, crushed stone saline tang alongside tobacco, tar, ripe black cherries and soft floral scents; the Cabernet really makes its mark. Sexy and rich, less immediately charming than the 2019 was at this point - it’s more restricted and coiled but more sophisticated, elegant and refreshing - a wine you want to sit and think about while the aromas and flavours open and evolve. Lovely definition, weight and texture overall. A clear stand out.

The Grand Vin 2020 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse De Lalande checks in as 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc that was raised in 60% new French oak. It has classic Pauillac character in its red, blue, and black fruits as well as graphite, cedar pencil, violet, and flower nuances. Seemingly from a cooler vintage with its purity, vibrancy, and focus, it nevertheless is concentrated and has ripe, gorgeous tannins, a great mid-palate, and a finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. A deep, concentrated, flawlessly balanced 2020 that's built for the long haul, it needs a solid decade of cellaring and will be a 50+-year wine. Of the recent trilogy of 2018, 2019, and 2020, director Nicolas Glumineau has been consistent in preferring the 2020, although I think at this point the nudge goes to the 2019. Regardless, these are all truly singular, magical wines that every reader will be thrilled to have in the cellar. It's a good time to be a Bordeaux lover!

Tannins and fruits march in step with each other to give this wine style and elegance. The structure is supple and the tannins smoothing, while still keeping great aging potential. Drink the wine from 2027.

Black-currant fruit aromas are also backed by a powerfully tannic wine. It is both elegant and concentrated, and its refined character comes from the stylish structure. The wine also has enormous potential. Drink from 2028.

A gorgeous fragrance on the nose, scented and deep with green peppercorns, blackcurrant leaf, cedar, tobacco and sweet cinammon. Succulent and juicy - the high acidity hits straight away. Lean and direct, but smooth, tannins have a faint graphite grip. Tangy alomst grapefruit on the palate with red berries and freshness throughout leading up to a long-lasting flavour at the end which is added to by a salty minerality. A subtle estate magic is on show. Still young and tight, this will need a few years before opening.

The 2021 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande wafts from the glass with aromas of blackberries and minty cassis mingled with notes of violet, lavender, pencil shavings and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and polished, it's beautifully seamless and complete, with a fleshy core of fruit, ripe acids and sweet, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the gently structured finish. This will offer a broad drinking window. It's one of the vintage's real successes, but it also represents only one-quarter of a "normal" production.

Title

The Estate

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse, a Second Growth in Pauillac since the 1855 Classification, embodies exceptional elegance. Founded in 1694 by Baron Jacques Pichon de Longueville, the estate was divided among his children, with the Comtesse portion going to his daughters. Now owned by Louis Roederer since 2007, the château has undergone significant renovations to maximize its terroir potential. Renowned for its balance, refinement, and depth, Pichon Longueville Comtesse produces wines that are sensual, seductive, and silky. Unusually approachable when young for a Médoc, due in part to a higher proportion of Merlot, the wine nonetheless possesses the tannic structure and richness to age beautifully for 10 to 20 years, solidifying its place among Bordeaux's finest.
