Black-currant fruit aromas are also backed by a powerfully tannic wine. It is both elegant and concentrated, and its refined character comes from the stylish structure. The wine also has enormous potential. Drink from 2028.

A gorgeous fragrance on the nose, scented and deep with green peppercorns, blackcurrant leaf, cedar, tobacco and sweet cinammon. Succulent and juicy - the high acidity hits straight away. Lean and direct, but smooth, tannins have a faint graphite grip. Tangy alomst grapefruit on the palate with red berries and freshness throughout leading up to a long-lasting flavour at the end which is added to by a salty minerality. A subtle estate magic is on show. Still young and tight, this will need a few years before opening.

The 2021 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande wafts from the glass with aromas of blackberries and minty cassis mingled with notes of violet, lavender, pencil shavings and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and polished, it's beautifully seamless and complete, with a fleshy core of fruit, ripe acids and sweet, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the gently structured finish. This will offer a broad drinking window. It's one of the vintage's real successes, but it also represents only one-quarter of a "normal" production.

The Estate

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse, a Second Growth in Pauillac since the 1855 Classification, embodies exceptional elegance. Founded in 1694 by Baron Jacques Pichon de Longueville, the estate was divided among his children, with the Comtesse portion going to his daughters. Now owned by Louis Roederer since 2007, the château has undergone significant renovations to maximize its terroir potential. Renowned for its balance, refinement, and depth, Pichon Longueville Comtesse produces wines that are sensual, seductive, and silky. Unusually approachable when young for a Médoc, due in part to a higher proportion of Merlot, the wine nonetheless possesses the tannic structure and richness to age beautifully for 10 to 20 years, solidifying its place among Bordeaux's finest.

Dramatic Vintage Turnaround

The 2002 vintage in Pauillac was characterized by its dramatic turnaround and unexpected quality. The year began with a dry winter and spring, followed by a challenging summer with alternating heat, storms, and cool periods. However, the vintage was saved by an exceptional "Indian summer" starting from September 10th, bringing warm, dry, and sunny conditions. This late favorable weather allowed for extended hang time and optimal ripening of the grapes, particularly benefiting the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends typical of Pauillac. Harvesting occurred later than usual, from late September through mid-October, under ideal conditions. The resulting wines showed surprising concentration, balance, and freshness, defying earlier pessimistic predictions. While not considered a legendary year, 2002 produced classic Pauillac wines with good structure, ripe tannins, and the potential for medium-term aging, showcasing the appellation's ability to produce quality even in challenging years.
