Il Sasso is a small, independently owned winery based in the medieval village of Montepulciano, Tuscany. Founded by a local family committed to preserving regional identity, the estate produces traditional Vino Nobile di Montepulciano from organically farmed Sangiovese, known locally as Prugnolo Gentile. The cellar operations emphasize low intervention, native yeast fermentations, and aging in large neutral oak, aiming to craft wines that express both varietal purity and historical continuity.
Montepulciano is located in southeastern Tuscany, within the province of Siena, and is one of the region’s historic centers of Sangiovese cultivation. The area’s elevated position—between 250 and 600 meters above sea level—contributes to moderate temperatures and consistent ventilation. This cooler hillside climate allows for a longer growing season, producing wines with balanced tannins, lifted aromatics, and a restrained, elegant profile distinct from neighboring appellations like Brunello or Chianti Classico.
The vineyards of Il Sasso are planted on a mix of clay, sand, and fossil-rich limestone, providing both structure and aromatic lift to the wines. The soils retain enough moisture to support dry farming while promoting root depth and mineral uptake. This geological foundation, combined with wide diurnal shifts and the estate’s emphasis on biodiversity, results in wines with freshness, grainy tannins, and a persistent mineral core. The estate’s Vino Nobile is a direct reflection of Montepulciano’s highland terroir, shaped by centuries of vine growing and a commitment to sustainable viticulture.
