Château de Plaisance, originally established in the early 20th century, has undergone a significant revival under the direction of Vanessa Cherruau, who took over the estate in 2019. Cherruau has repositioned the domaine with a focus on organic and biodynamic practices, reclaiming its identity as a premier producer in the Loire Valley. The estate’s historic roots in Anjou’s viticultural heritage are now paired with a contemporary vision that emphasizes site expression and agricultural integrity.
Situated on the slopes of the Chaume and Quarts-de-Chaume appellations in Anjou, Château de Plaisance benefits from one of the most prized terroirs in the Loire. The region is known for its gentle hillsides overlooking the Layon River, which contribute to morning mists and favorable botrytis conditions in certain vintages. This geographic positioning allows for both complex dry wines and age-worthy sweet wines, depending on the vintage and parcel selection.
The vineyards span schist, volcanic rock, and sandstone soils, providing a mineral backbone to the estate’s Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc-based wines. With elevations reaching up to 100 meters, and south-facing exposures, the site allows for gradual phenolic development while preserving acidity. These geologic and climatic conditions produce wines with linear precision, pronounced salinity, and the ability to evolve gracefully over time.
