Founded in 1997 by Gilles and Joëlle Morat in the village of Vergisson, Domaine Gilles Morat emerged from a lineage of growers who previously sold their grapes to négociants. Gilles combined his family's vineyards with additional parcels to establish a 7-hectare estate focused on producing expressive Chardonnay wines. The domaine has been certified organic since the 2022 vintage, reflecting a commitment to sustainable viticulture.
Situated in the Mâconnais region of southern Burgundy, the estate's vineyards lie on the slopes of Vergisson, an area renowned for its limestone-rich soils and favorable exposures. The vineyards, including notable sites like "Sur La Roche," benefit from elevations around 400 meters, providing a microclimate that balances ripeness with acidity.
The terroir of Vergisson, characterized by stony, well-drained soils and a mix of southern exposures, contributes to the intensity and purity of the wines. The combination of altitude and soil composition allows for the cultivation of Chardonnay grapes that express the minerality and finesse typical of the region.
