Domaine Saumaize, located in the heart of the Mâconnais, is a family-run estate founded by Roger and Christine Saumaize. Today, the domaine is managed by their son-in-law, who continues the family’s tradition of crafting high-quality Chardonnay. Known for their dedication to sustainable viticulture, the Saumaize family has established the estate as a benchmark for expressive white wines in the region.
The Mâconnais, in southern Burgundy, is celebrated for its excellent Chardonnay, offering wines with richness and minerality. The region enjoys a warmer climate compared to northern Burgundy, promoting optimal ripeness in the grapes. Within the Mâconnais, appellations such as Pouilly-Fuissé, where Domaine Saumaize is based, are known for producing elegant wines with depth and aging potential.
The vineyards of Domaine Saumaize are planted on limestone-rich soils, a hallmark of the Mâconnais, which imparts freshness and minerality to the wines. These soils, combined with the region’s sunny exposures and cooling influences from the Saône River, create ideal conditions for producing balanced and aromatic Chardonnay.
