Jean Foillard took over his family’s domaine in Villié-Morgon in the early 1980s and quickly became a pioneer of the natural wine movement in Beaujolais. Inspired by Marcel Lapierre and the ideals of Jules Chauvet, he eschewed additives, embraced organic viticulture, and let the land guide his work. His wines, now cult classics, are known for their purity, texture, and ability to age.
Foillard’s core holdings lie in Morgon’s famed Côte du Py, as well as Corcelette and Fleury. The Côte du Py is a volcanic hill composed of decomposed schist, manganese, and granite, offering poor soils that stress vines and lead to deep-rooted systems. These stony, friable slopes create naturally low yields and long phenolic ripening, which give Foillard’s wines their signature depth and mineral backbone.
Corcelette, by contrast, features sandy pink granite with more floral and lifted expression, while Fleury offers a mix of clay and silt atop granite bedrock. These varying soil types translate into site-specific wines with remarkable clarity: Côte du Py brings smoke and spice, Corcelette delivers red fruit and charm, and Fleury adds supple, savory structure. The expression of terroir here is not just geological—it is soulful.
