Podere Giodo, founded by renowned Tuscan oenologist Carlo Ferrini in the early 2000s, represents a personal project rooted in decades of experience crafting wines for top estates across Italy. The Alberelli di Giodo label is a focused expression of Ferrini’s dedication to Nerello Mascalese, cultivated on Mount Etna’s ancient lava flows. While his Brunello di Montalcino work forms the estate’s foundation, this Sicilian outpost reflects Ferrini’s deepening interest in volcanic terroirs and indigenous varietals.
Located on the northern slope of Mount Etna near Passopisciaro, Alberelli di Giodo occupies one of Sicily’s most dynamic viticultural zones. The region’s altitude—ranging from 800 to 1,000 meters—creates a cooler growing season that preserves aromatics and tension. Etna’s diurnal temperature shifts and proximity to the Ionian Sea promote long ripening cycles, resulting in wines marked by both finesse and energy.
The ungrafted Nerello Mascalese vines are planted in the traditional alberello (bush vine) system on free-draining, decomposed lava soils. These dark volcanic sands are rich in minerals but low in organic matter, limiting vigor and concentrating the fruit. The vineyard's high elevation, combined with steady breezes and intense solar exposure, enables the production of precise, finely structured wines that convey the distinctive character of Etna’s northern slope.
