Domaine Tempier, founded in 1834 in Bandol, became one of the most influential estates in Provence under the stewardship of Lucien and Lulu Peyraud. After Lulu inherited the domaine from her family in 1936, she and Lucien championed the Mourvèdre grape and led the push to create the Bandol AOC in 1941. Over the following decades, they forged one of France’s most iconic domaines—celebrated by Kermit Lynch, adored by Alice Waters, and revered for its commitment to rustic elegance and cellar-worthy reds.
Bandol is a singular corner of Provence: a Mediterranean amphitheater of steep, terraced vineyards backed by limestone hills and swept by marine breezes. The proximity to the sea tempers the region’s sun-drenched climate, while the elevation and limestone-rich soils preserve acidity and structure. Unlike most of Provence, Bandol is best known for red wines, particularly those based on Mourvèdre, which achieves full ripeness only in this corner of southern France.
The estate spans 38 hectares, including legendary single parcels like La Tourtine, Cabassaou, and La Migoua. These sites rest on crumbly limestone, red clay, and ancient marine sediments, creating conditions perfect for deeply rooted vines and low yields. Mourvèdre dominates the plantings, with Grenache and Cinsault supporting. Tempier farms organically and harvests by hand, with long fermentations and aging in large foudres to preserve terroir over oak influence.
