Domaine Santamaria is a family-run estate located in Patrimonio, Corsica, led by Jean-Charles Santamaria. Following in his father’s footsteps, Jean-Charles took over the domaine in the early 2000s and has continued to refine its organic and traditional approach to winemaking. Emphasizing native Corsican varieties such as Niellucciu and Vermentinu, the estate produces wines that reflect both the heritage of the island and a commitment to low-intervention practices. Fermentations are spontaneous, sulfur use is minimal, and aging takes place primarily in stainless steel or neutral vessels to preserve purity.
The domaine is situated within the Patrimonio AOC, Corsica’s oldest and most prestigious wine appellation, located in the northern part of the island. Surrounded by limestone mountains and facing the Mediterranean Sea, the region benefits from maritime breezes that temper the intense island sun. This climate produces wines with both Mediterranean warmth and lifted freshness, particularly well-suited to the structure of Niellucciu, a variety genetically linked to Sangiovese but distinct in expression due to its island context.
Santamaria’s vineyards are planted on chalky clay and limestone soils at varying elevations that climb from the sea inland toward the mountains. These soils enhance minerality and provide excellent drainage, supporting vine health in the arid summers. The strong diurnal shifts and persistent coastal winds contribute to thick skins, balanced phenolic development, and natural disease resistance. The resulting wines show saline tension, vibrant acidity, and a clear imprint of Corsica’s rugged, sun-soaked terroir.
