The Champans seemed to me a significant step up in quality among the reds in Lafon’s cellar. There is a lovely, ripe black plum fruit with notes of earth and smoke. The texture was tannic, yet the tannins seemed fine-grained, with no astringent edge. A lively, fresh acidity pulled the wine to a winningly long finish. The grapes come from the domaine’s half-hectare in Champans, and are carefully sorted and destemmed before a gentle fermentation on native yeast and ageing in mainly older casks.

Notes of blackberries, cherries and spices introduce Lafon's 2021 Volnay 1er Cru Champans, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine built around lively acids and melting tannins, concluding with an orange-inflected finish. It's unusually suave and charming for a young Champans.

The Estate

Domaine des Comtes Lafon is a renowned wine estate located in Meursault, Burgundy, France. Founded in 1894 by Jules Lafon, it has been under the stewardship of Dominique Lafon since 1984. The domaine is particularly famous for its white wines, especially its Meursault and Montrachet Grand Cru. It manages about 14 hectares of vineyards, including some of the most prestigious plots in Meursault.

Heat Tests Burgundy's Core

Record summer temperatures forced historically early picking, but Champans' east-facing slope and clay-limestone soils helped preserve acidity. Strategic canopy management protected fruit during the intense August heat. The wine balances Volnay elegance with ripe cherry, spice, and mineral notes framed by refined structure.

Frost Impacts Yields

April frost severely reduced yields in this iron-rich premier cru site, though careful canopy management helped protect against further weather challenges. Late season warmth proved crucial for achieving phenolic ripeness in the surviving fruit. The wine reflects both the vintage's freshness and the site's natural concentration, showing red fruits, spice, and Champans' characteristic ferrous minerality.
