2021 Château Cheval Blanc

Sale price $640.00 | In Stock Ships from our French cellar (Delivery in 4-10 days) | Lay Down

The 2021 vintage faced significant challenges across Bordeaux, including spring frosts, rain, and disease pressure, resulting in reduced yields. Despite these difficulties, Cheval Blanc produced a wine that emphasizes finesse over power, offering a more classical Bordeaux profile with fresh red and black fruit flavors, floral notes, and subtle hints of spice and tobacco. The palate shows medium body and elegant structure, with bright acidity and fine-grained tannins, showcasing the estate's ability to craft refined and balanced wines even in challenging years.

The aromas of currants and flowers with hints of stones and sandalwood are enticing. Medium- to full-bodied, with an impressive structure of polished yet intense and focused tannins that run the length of the wine. Both the acidity and tannins play off each other, giving a punchy character. A classic Cheval. Only 13.3% alcohol. 52% cabernet franc, 43% merlot and 5% cabernet sauvignon. For a decade or so, this wine never had so much cabernet franc. Needs four or five years to soften. Drink after 2029.

The 2021 Château Cheval Blanc has turned out beautifully in bottle, and director Pierre-Olivier Clouet even considers it to be superior to the 2020, a preference that I share. Wafting from the glass with aromas of mulberries and cherries mingled with incense, iris and rose petals, framed by a deft touch of new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a velvety attack that segues into a rich, concentrated mid-palate framed by sweet, powdery tannins and concluding with a long, penetrating, rose-inflected finish.

The Grand Vin 2021 Château Cheval Blanc is unquestionably a candidate for the wine of the vintage. Based on 52% Cabernet Franc, 43% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon (the 2011 comes close to this blend), it has a vivid purple hue as well as gorgeous aromatics of black raspberries, spring flowers, cassis, freshly sharpened pencils, and damp earth. Medium to full-bodied, flawlessly balanced, and incredibly elegant, it has plenty of mid-palate depth, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. While it already offers pleasure, it deserves 4-5 years in the cellar and will shine over the following two decades.

The Estate

Cheval Blanc stands out as the undisputed leader in Saint-Emilion. Its unique blend, dominated by Cabernet Franc, gives the wine a distinctive style and elegance that is highly sought after throughout the Right Bank. Although devoid of Cabernet Sauvignon, this Premier Grand Cru Classé A remains an exceptional aging wine that withstands the test of time, even decades, to ultimately offer us highly complex bouquets where moka mingles with truffle and raspberry. Since 1998, Château Cheval Blanc has been owned by Albert Frère and Bernard Arnault. It is managed by Pierre Lurton, an iconic figure in the Bordeaux wine region.

Balance Beats Adversity

Château Cheval Blanc, the iconic Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé A estate, produced a remarkable wine in 2016. The vintage began with a wet spring, but conditions improved dramatically with a warm, dry summer and autumn. This extended period of fine weather allowed for a leisurely harvest of perfectly ripened grapes. The resulting wine is praised for its depth, complexity, and exceptional balance between power and finesse.

Classic Despite Challenges

Château Cheval Blanc faced significant challenges in 2021 but managed to produce a wine that reflects the estate's unwavering commitment to quality. The vintage was marked by severe spring frosts, resulting in reduced yields, followed by a cool, wet summer that increased disease pressure. Meticulous vineyard work and strict selection during harvest were crucial in maintaining quality. The resulting wine, while perhaps less opulent than recent vintages, showcases finesse, bright acidity, and the classic Cheval Blanc elegance.

Flawless, Elegant, Long-Lived

2005 was one of Bordeaux’s greatest modern vintages, marked by near-perfect weather—sunny, dry days and cool nights that ensured slow, even ripening. At Cheval Blanc, the gravel and clay terroir allowed both Merlot and Cabernet Franc to achieve optimal phenolic maturity, resulting in a wine of intensity, finesse, and extraordinary aging potential. The estate produced a wine that epitomizes the harmony and structure of the vintage.
