Ferdinando Principiano took over his family's estate in Monforte d'Alba in the mid-1990s, initially pursuing a modernist style before shifting toward traditional, low-intervention winemaking in the early 2000s. Influenced by the natural wine movement and historical practices, Principiano began eliminating synthetic chemicals in the vineyard and additives in the cellar. His philosophical return to simplicity reflects a desire to let the land speak clearly through his wines, particularly Barolo, Dolcetto, and Nebbiolo from old vines.
The estate is located in the southern portion of Barolo, near the border with Alta Langa. Monforte d'Alba is known for producing structured, long-lived wines due to its altitude and the compacted, older soils of the Helvetian geological formation. This area experiences cooler temperatures and longer ripening periods, contributing to the precision and aromatic lift in Principiano's bottlings. The proximity to forested hillsides also supports biodiversity, which plays a role in the estate’s regenerative vineyard practices.
The vineyards span elevations from 250 to over 400 meters and are planted on limestone and marl soils with good drainage. These conditions are particularly well-suited to Nebbiolo, encouraging the development of tannic structure alongside floral and mineral character. Many of the vines are over 50 years old, and some grow wild along the edges of the estate’s woods. The natural ecosystem, combined with Principiano's minimal intervention approach—including native yeast fermentations and little to no sulfur use—produces wines of clarity, energy, and site fidelity.
