Domaine Les Cailloux, established by Lucien Brunel in 1954, is a family-run estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. André Brunel, Lucien's son, took over in 1971, expanding the estate's holdings and enhancing its reputation for quality. The domaine is known for its traditional winemaking approach and its flagship wine, Cuvée Centenaire, produced from century-old Grenache vines.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape, located in the southern Rhône Valley, is celebrated for its robust and complex red wines, primarily blends of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. The region's Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot summers and the mistral wind, provides ideal conditions for grape cultivation. The area's diverse terroirs contribute to the distinctive characteristics of its wines.
The soils in Châteauneuf-du-Pape are varied, with compositions ranging from limestone and clay to sand and the region's signature galets roulés (rounded stones). Domaine Les Cailloux's vineyards, particularly those with galets roulés, benefit from these stones' ability to retain heat, promoting even ripening of the grapes. This combination of soil composition and climate results in wines that are both powerful and expressive of their terroir.
