Located in Crouttes-sur-Marne, at the western edge of the Champagne region, Champagne Françoise Bedel is a small family estate. Françoise took over her parents' domaine in 1979 and began converting to biodynamic viticulture in 1996, inspired by her son's health journey and a visit with Jean-Pierre Fleury.
Crouttes-sur-Marne lies in the far western reaches of the Vallée de la Marne, a zone known for its clay-rich soils and a cooler, damper climate than Champagne’s eastern regions. This sector is ideally suited to Meunier, which ripens earlier and resists spring frost more effectively than Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. The location is also more rustic and less commercialized, a fact reflected in the estate’s intimate scale and independent spirit.
The estate farms 8 hectares, planted mostly to Pinot Meunier, with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir playing supporting roles. The soils are predominantly clay with pockets of sand and limestone, and they impart a broad, vinous texture to the wines. Bedel’s biodynamic regime emphasizes the health of the microbial ecosystem, with careful ploughing, herbal preparations, and lunar harvesting schedules resulting in wines of savory, earthy expression and firm aging structure.
