The Estate

The vineyard of Château Haut-Brion is part of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, located north of the Graves wine region in Bordeaux. Haut-Brion's terroir, formed by two significant ridges of Günzian gravel, rises 12 to 15 meters above the nearby watercourses. These gravelly soils consist of small stones, composed of various quartz varieties: true gems of Château Haut-Brion's terroir. Château Haut-Brion was established and structured as early as 1525, making it the oldest vineyard in Bordeaux.

July's intense heat wave challenged the vines, yet Haut-Brion's deep-rooted Cabernet Sauvignon proved remarkably resilient in the estate's ancient gravel soils. September brought vital rain and cooling, allowing for extended hang time and complete phenolic development. The wine reveals classic First Growth restraint with tobacco, dark fruit intensity, and a firm tannic frame that speaks to the vintage's powerful nature.

Aromatic Brilliance

The 2017 vintage began with early vegetative growth, accelerated by a warm spring despite late April frosts. A significant water deficit in summer was offset by June rainfall, preventing drought stress. Above-average sunshine and hot days balanced by cool nights created ideal ripening conditions. September brought favorable harvest weather, interrupted briefly by rain that benefited Cabernet ripening. The resulting wines showcase outstanding fruit quality and crucial freshness, positioning 2017 as a potentially benchmark vintage.
