Vigneti Massa, led by Walter Massa, has become a defining name in the revival of native Piedmontese varieties, most notably Timorasso. Based in the village of Monleale, the estate has been in the Massa family for generations, but it was Walter's pioneering work in the 1980s and 1990s that brought renewed attention to local white grapes nearly lost to obscurity. Rejecting the dominant trends favoring international varieties, Massa focused on quality-driven viticulture and low-intervention practices to elevate the reputation of indigenous wines from the Colli Tortonesi.
Located in southeastern Piedmont, the Colli Tortonesi is a lesser-known area marked by hilly terrain between the Apennines and the Po Valley. The region experiences a unique convergence of maritime and continental influences, resulting in moderate rainfall, warm days, and cool nights. This transitional geography supports both red and white varieties, though Timorasso has become the emblematic grape of the area, capable of producing age-worthy, structured wines with both body and finesse.
Vigneti Massa’s vineyards are situated on limestone-rich clay soils at elevations between 250 and 400 meters. These conditions are ideal for Timorasso, allowing the grape to ripen slowly while retaining acidity and developing its characteristic minerality. The terroir contributes to wines with pronounced aromatics, firm texture, and notable salinity. Massa’s commitment to expressing this site through minimal cellar intervention results in wines that are transparent, structured, and deeply connected to their geological and climatic origins.
