Founded in 1994 by Manfred and Elaine Krankl, Sine Qua Non has become an icon of California’s wine world, renowned for its boundary-pushing, small-batch wines. Sine Qua Non is based in Ventura County, with vineyards spread across California’s Central Coast, including Santa Barbara County. This region benefits from a Mediterranean climate with cool coastal influences and sunny growing conditions, ideal for Rhône varietals like Syrah, Grenache, and Viognier. The diversity of the Central Coast allows for distinctive expressions of these varietals.
The terroir of Sine Qua Non’s estate vineyards is defined by complex soils, including sandy loam, clay, and marine sediment. These soils, combined with the cooling breezes from the Pacific Ocean, create optimal conditions for slow, even ripening. This results in wines that exhibit intense concentration, vibrant acidity, and a sense of place unique to each site.
