Founded in 1844 by Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary, Penfolds is one of Australia's most iconic wineries. Initially producing fortified wines for medicinal purposes, the estate evolved under Mary's leadership after Christopher's death. In the mid-20th century, chief winemaker Max Schubert introduced the legendary Grange, a Shiraz-based wine that redefined Australian winemaking.
Penfolds sources grapes from various regions across South Australia, including the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra. This multi-regional approach allows for consistency and complexity in their wines, showcasing the diversity of Australia's viticultural landscapes.
The estate's vineyards feature a range of soil types, from red clay to limestone, contributing to the distinct profiles of their wines.
