Château Lafon-Rochet's origins date back to the 16th century, initially known as Domaine de Rochet. In 1650, following the marriage of Antoinette de Guillemotes to Étienne de Lafon, the estate was renamed Château Lafon-Rochet. Over the centuries, it has been under various ownerships, with significant contributions from each to its development and reputation.
Situated in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux, Château Lafon-Rochet is ideally located between the esteemed estates of Lafite-Rothschild and Cos d'Estournel. The region benefits from a temperate maritime climate, with the nearby Gironde estuary providing a moderating influence, fostering the cultivation of robust and structured wines characteristic of Saint-Estèphe.
The estate's 45-hectare vineyard is composed of three distinct soil types: clayey gravel, dry gravel, and colluvial soils. This diversity allows for the cultivation of various grape varieties, each thriving in their respective terroirs, contributing to the complexity and depth of Château Lafon-Rochet's wines.
