A glorious example of 1990 – not excessively weighty but marked by freshness, poise and wonderful ripeness of dark berry fruit. Impeccable balance. The initial power of the vintage has eased back leaving a wine which it is hard to imagine being much better. A heavenly wine (as befitting La Mission). 1990 was an acclaimed vintage, coming straight after that of the very hot 1989. A warm winter led to an exceptionally early budburst, but spring was cold before a dry, hot summer. The crop was abundant and very healthy.

The 1990 La Mission Haut-Brion is drinking brilliantly right now. Revealing aromas of truffles, spices, mocha, prune and a touch of tobacco, it’s beautifully balanced, satiny and sensual, with incredible concentration and a long, delicate finish. It’s a very beautiful 1990 with all the characteristics of this estate: finesse and elegance. I recommend drinking it now and until 2040.

Much more linear and firm than the 1989. Full- to medium-bodied, with firm tannins and a racy finish. A fine wine. '89/'90 Bordeaux non-blind horizontal. Drink now. 7,000 cases made.

Late Rain Challenges Harvest

September rains complicated the harvest timing at La Mission, yet the estate's renowned gravel soils provided crucial drainage during the wet period. The old Cabernet Sauvignon vines on the Haut-Brion plateau demonstrated their ability to withstand difficult conditions. The wine reflects the vintage's lean character, showing classic Graves tobacco and earth notes with moderate concentration and an elegant structure.
