Woodland fruits with a backdrop of black-pepper spices set the scene for the second-label wine of Haut-Brion. It is powerful, with some firm tannins and integrated acidity. Drink this fine wine from 2027.

This is deep for a 2021, with blackberries, walnuts, chocolate and hazelnuts. Very subtle. Medium body, with an appealingly creamy center palate. Beautiful now but will improve with age.

More closed and shy than La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion, the 2021 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion offers up a delicate, complex bouquet with aromas of plums, spices, lead pencil, licorice and dark berries. Medium to full-bodied with a structuring core of fruit, it’s seamless and vibrant with a long, penetrating finish. Keep it over the next decade.

The Estate

Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is the second wine of Château Haut-Brion, a Bordeaux First Growth. Introduced in 2007, it replaced Château Bahans Haut-Brion and is named after Clarence Dillon, who bought Haut-Brion in 1935. Typically containing more Merlot than the Grand Vin, Le Clarence is more approachable young while maintaining Haut-Brion's style. It's made from younger vines and plots not used for the first wine, but with the same exacting standards.

Classic Elegance Prevails in 2021

At Haut Brion, the 2021 growing season presented significant challenges with spring frost and summer rainfall requiring meticulous vineyard management. The estate's experienced team responded with precise canopy management and careful sorting, focusing on achieving optimal ripeness despite the cooler conditions. These efforts resulted in wines of surprising freshness and clarity, though with a more classical, restrained profile than recent warm vintages.
