Domaine de Marcoux is a respected estate located in the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in France's Southern Rhône Valley. The domaine has been in the Armenier family for generations, with sisters Catherine and Sophie Armenier taking over the reins in 1990. They were pioneers in biodynamic viticulture, converting the estate to this practice in 1991, making Domaine de Marcoux one of the first in the region to do so. The estate is known for producing wines of exceptional purity and elegance, with a focus on expressing the unique terroir of their vineyards.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where Domaine de Marcoux is situated, is one of the most prestigious appellations in the Southern Rhône. The region is famous for its powerful, full-bodied red wines, typically made from a blend of up to 13 permitted grape varieties. Grenache usually dominates these blends, often complemented by Syrah and Mourvèdre. The climate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape is Mediterranean, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters, with the fierce Mistral wind playing a significant role in vineyard management and grape ripening.
The terroir of Domaine de Marcoux is diverse, reflecting the varied soils found throughout Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate's 17.5 hectares are spread across 13 different parcels, each with its own unique soil composition. These range from the famous galets roulés (large, rounded pebbles) that Châteauneuf-du-Pape is known for, to areas of sand, clay, and limestone. This diversity of soils, combined with the domaine's biodynamic practices, allows for a complex expression of terroir in their wines. The galets roulés, in particular, play a Crucial role in heat retention, helping to fully ripen the Grenache grapes that form the backbone of Marcoux's wines, while the varying soil types contribute to the wines' complexity and depth.
