Château Calon-Ségur Vertical (2010-2012)

Sale price $665.00 | Sold Out | Ready to Drink

This vertical offers three excellent Saint-Estèphe vintages, expressing Calon-Ségur’s classic structure with 2010’s powerful black fruit and firm tannins, 2011’s fresh red berries and balance, and 2012’s ripe cassis and silky texture.

The 2010 Château Calon-Ségur is a wine of monumental power and structure, born from an exceptional vintage in Bordeaux. The estate’s deep gravel and clay soils amplified the richness and depth of the Cabernet Sauvignon, while cooler nights preserved its vibrant acidity. Aromas of blackcurrant, cedar, and violets lead into a dense, layered palate of ripe black fruit, graphite, and subtle spice, framed by refined tannins that ensure extraordinary cellaring potential.

The 2011 Château Calon-Ségur reflects the estate’s dedication to crafting balanced wines in challenging years. A cooler vintage required precise canopy management and reduced yields, resulting in a wine with bright aromas of redcurrant, cranberry, and fresh herbs. The medium-bodied palate offers tart red fruit, tobacco, and fine minerality, with fresh acidity and supple tannins that make this a more accessible expression of Saint-Estèphe’s elegance.

The 2012 Château Calon-Ségur captures the charm of a more understated vintage, offering approachability alongside Saint-Estèphe’s signature structure. The clay-limestone soils provided the vines with steady water retention, ensuring balance during a warm summer. Aromas of plum, cassis, and floral notes transition into a silky palate of ripe red fruit, graphite, and earthy undertones, making it an excellent candidate for early drinking or medium-term cellaring.

This is an architectural wine, very classical in its structure like so many of the top wines of 2010. It's powered by ripe tannins and beautiful black currant fruits. While the wine is gorgeously ripe, it also has a powerful dark and structured character. For long-term aging.

Sure pure fruit to this red with a minerality and floral undertone. You can smell the warm stones. Full body, with a beautiful depth of fruit and velvety tannins. Dense and balanced. Layered with a light salty and meaty character as well. Great length. Mostly Cabernet Sauvignon. Try in 2017.

Intense nose, quite herbal and smoky with tobacco, liquorice, sweet spice and dark chocolate. Supple and lithe. Chewy in the best way, with bright, vibrant strawberries and black cherries. Tannins still prominent. Cool blueberries and soft salty minerality sustain the wine to a long finish. Good structure and character, balanced and easy to enjoy.

This is from a precocious vintage, with a harvest beginning on September 3, the very day the estate’s longtime owner, the redoubtable Madame Gasqueton, passed away. The nose remains a bit closed, but with airing seductive spices combine with notes of high-toned blackberry and caramel. The wine is more expressive on the palate thanks to a juicy, fleshy structure girded by elegant tannins and to a delicate touch of oak. The underlying acidity so characteristic of Calon Ségur brings added elan, leading to the graceful, airborne finish.

This wine has so many of the structural elements of a Saint-Estèphe, but also is enveloped by ripe fruitiness. Black in color and dense in character, it has sweetness from the plum juice fruits and great acidity. But it is also firm, powerfully projecting a serious potential. Drink from 2022.

A red with wonderful aromas of blackberries, spices and plums that follow through to a full body, with lovely integrated tannins and a polished, fine finish. Better in 2017.

Firm and structured, this beautifully concentrated wine has plenty of the dark tannins that come out of Cabernet Sauvignon in Saint-Estèphe while allowing room for juicy fruit. The wood aging is still showing, giving some spice to the wine. At the end, it's the density of the wine that's so impressive. Drink from 2024.

Dense but pure, offering suave plum, raspberry coulis and black currant fruit, and tobacco, tar and iron nuances. This is integrated and refined through the long finish, but lacks the vintage's austerity. Very nicely done. Best from 2017 through 2025. 6,665 cases made.

A silky and polished red with currant, walnut and black truffle character. Full body, silky tannins and a fine finish. It reminds me of the excellent 1995. Better in 2017.

The Estate

Château Calon-Ségur's history extends to the Gallo-Roman era, with its name derived from "calones," referring to small boats navigating the Gironde estuary. In the 18th century, the estate was owned by the Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, who famously stated, "I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon," a sentiment reflected in the heart emblem on the château's label.
