The 2010 Château Calon-Ségur is a wine of monumental power and structure, born from an exceptional vintage in Bordeaux. The estate’s deep gravel and clay soils amplified the richness and depth of the Cabernet Sauvignon, while cooler nights preserved its vibrant acidity. Aromas of blackcurrant, cedar, and violets lead into a dense, layered palate of ripe black fruit, graphite, and subtle spice, framed by refined tannins that ensure extraordinary cellaring potential.
The 2011 Château Calon-Ségur reflects the estate’s dedication to crafting balanced wines in challenging years. Château Calon-Ségur's history extends to the Gallo-Roman era, with its name derived from "calones," referring to small boats navigating the Gironde estuary. In the 18th century, the estate was owned by the Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, who famously stated, "I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon," a sentiment reflected in the heart emblem on the château's label.
Located in the northernmost part of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, Château Calon-Ségur's vineyards are enclosed within a walled area, a rarity in the Médoc. The proximity to the Gironde estuary provides a unique microclimate, with the river's moderating effects contributing to the distinctiveness of the wines produced.
The vineyard's terroir is characterized by thick gravel layers deposited during the Quaternary era, overlaying a predominantly clay subsoil. This composition, combined with the vineyard's sharp relief and slopes, facilitates excellent drainage, essential for the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, resulting in wines that authentically reflect their terroir.
