Château Cos d’Estournel, located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, is one of the "Super Seconds" of the Médoc. Cos d’Estournel was established by a unique character, Louis Gaspard d’Estournel , nicknamed the "Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe" due to his affinity for the Orient and particularly for wines "returning from the Indies." Exceptional terroir, significant efforts, and substantial investments have propelled this estate to rapid success. Today, Cos d’Estournel stands among the greats of Bordeaux. Since 2000, it has been owned by Michel Reybier.
Saint-Estèphe is the northernmost of the four famous communes of the Médoc peninsula in Bordeaux, France. Known for producing powerful, tannic, and long-lived red wines, Saint-Estèphe's terroir is characterized by its gravelly soil with a high clay content. This unique soil composition, combined with the region's maritime climate, allows for excellent drainage and water retention, particularly beneficial during dry seasons. Saint-Estèphe wines are typically blends dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wines are often described as robust and structured, requiring significant aging to reach their full potential.
Located between Pauillac and St-Estèphe, the hill of Cos rises 20 meters above the Gironde, benefiting from a microclimate moderating extreme temperatures. Resting on limestone with Quaternary gravel, it ensures ideal drainage. This unique climate and terroir allow Cabernet Sauvignon to mature evenly. Cos d'Estournel vintages consistently deliver rich, fruity wines with mature, fine tannins, allowing for long aging, often lasting decades for the finest vintages.
