Château Montrose is a prestigious wine estate located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux, France. Classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, it is often considered to perform at a First Growth level. The estate has a rich history dating back to the 18th century and has been owned by Martin and Olivier Bouygues since 2006. Montrose is renowned for producing powerful, long-lived wines primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The château has gained particular acclaim for its consistent quality and its pioneering efforts in sustainable viticulture.
Saint-Estèphe is the northernmost of the four famous communes of the Médoc peninsula in Bordeaux, France, known for producing powerful, tannic, and long-lived red wines. Saint-Estèphe wines are typically blends dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wines are often described as robust and structured, requiring significant aging to reach their full potential.
The estate's 95 hectares of vineyards sit on a prime location - a gravelly outcrop overlooking the Gironde estuary. This terroir features a complex mix of deep gravel beds over a clay subsoil, providing excellent drainage and heat retention. The proximity to the Gironde estuary creates a microclimate that moderates temperature extremes and reduces the risk of frost damage. These elements, along with the estate's meticulous vineyard management, result in grapes of outstanding quality that produce wines known for their power, structure, and remarkable aging potential, embodying the classic characteristics of Saint-Estèphe.
