The Vignobles de la Coulée de Serrant, located in the Savennières appellation, is a historic estate with a legacy dating back to 1130, when it was planted by Cistercian monks. Today, it is managed by Nicolas Joly, a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture. Since taking over the estate in 1977, Joly has implemented biodynamic practices, emphasizing the connection between the vineyard and its natural environment. His dedication has positioned the estate as a reference point for biodynamic wine production worldwide.
Savennières, situated on the north bank of the Loire River, is renowned for its dry Chenin Blanc wines. The region's schist soils and temperate climate contribute to the production of wines with remarkable structure and longevity. The Coulée de Serrant is a monopole, encompassing a single 7-hectare vineyard that holds its own appellation, Savennières-Coulée-de-Serrant. This unique status underscores the vineyard's exceptional terroir and historical significance.
The vineyard's steep slopes and schist soils provide excellent drainage and heat retention, fostering optimal ripening conditions for Chenin Blanc. Joly's biodynamic approach involves minimal intervention, with a focus on natural processes and lunar cycles. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, and the wines are aged in old barrels to preserve their purity. The resulting wines are known for their depth, complexity, and expression of the unique Coulée de Serrant terroir.
