Le Vieux Donjon, founded in 1966 by Marcel Michel, has established itself as a cornerstone of traditional winemaking in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Now managed by the third generation of the Michel family, the estate remains dedicated to crafting wines that reflect the authenticity and heritage of the region. The domaine produces only one red and one white wine each vintage, emphasizing quality over quantity.
The estate is located in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, one of the most prestigious appellations in the southern Rhône Valley. The region’s Mediterranean climate, with its abundant sunshine, moderate rainfall, and mistral wind, creates ideal conditions for Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and other traditional Rhône varietals.
The terroir of Le Vieux Donjon features a mix of iconic galets roulés, clay, and sandy soils. The galets retain heat during the day and release it at night, promoting even ripening, while the clay and sand contribute structure and finesse. This distinctive combination allows the wines to express a powerful yet balanced profile, showcasing the depth and complexity of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
