Domaine Vacheron, established in 1900 by Maurice Vacheron, has evolved into one of Sancerre's most esteemed estates. Currently managed by cousins Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique Vacheron, the domaine has been a pioneer in biodynamic viticulture within the region, achieving certification in 2005. Their commitment to sustainable practices and a focus on single-vineyard expressions have elevated the estate's reputation for producing wines of exceptional purity and terroir specificity.
Located in the heart of the Sancerre appellation, Domaine Vacheron's vineyards span approximately 50 hectares, with 38 hectares dedicated to Sauvignon Blanc and 12 hectares to Pinot Noir. The region's continental climate, marked by significant diurnal temperature variations, contributes to the development of wines with vibrant acidity and aromatic complexity. The estate's diverse vineyard sites, including Les Romains, Belle Dame, and Guigne-Chèvres, offer a range of exposures and soil types, allowing for the production of distinctive single-parcel wines.
Domaine Vacheron's vineyards are characterized by a variety of soils, including flint (silex), limestone, and clay-limestone. These soils impart unique mineral qualities to the wines, contributing to their complexity and structure. The estate employs biodynamic farming methods, eschewing synthetic chemicals and emphasizing the health of the vineyard ecosystem. Harvesting is conducted manually, and vinification is tailored to each parcel, with fermentation occurring in stainless steel or oak vessels as appropriate. The resulting wines are noted for their clarity, balance, and faithful expression of their respective terroirs.
