Jérôme Castagnier took over his family's domaine in the early 2000s after a brief career as a professional horn player in the Garde Républicaine orchestra. A fifth-generation grower, Castagnier inherited not only vineyards but a legacy rooted in the Côte de Nuits, with holdings that once supplied grapes to Domaine Leroy. Since assuming full control, he has expanded and modernized the estate, bottling under his own name and gradually transitioning to organic farming practices. Today, the domaine—based in Morey-Saint-Denis—is one of the most exciting small domaines in Burgundy, known for a bold, expressive style that respects both terroir and tradition.
The domaine’s vineyards stretch across some of the Côte d'Or's most prestigious villages, with Premier and Grand Cru plots in Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis, and Vougeot, and a small holding in Clos de la Roche. The heart of the domaine is in Morey-Saint-Denis, a village known for bridging the silky elegance of Chambolle with the structure of Gevrey-Chambertin. Castagnier also produces wines from Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges, offering a panoramic view of the Côte de Nuits' nuanced terroirs.
The estate’s vineyards are rooted in classic Burgundian soils—primarily shallow, well-drained limestone with varying amounts of clay and marl, depending on the site. The Clos de la Roche parcel, in particular, features fractured limestone and decomposed rock that promote excellent drainage and deep vine penetration, contributing to the site’s hallmark power and longevity. Farming is increasingly organic, and all harvesting is done by hand. In the cellar, Castagnier employs whole-cluster fermentation and aging in up to 50% new oak, crafting wines that are richly fruited yet grounded in a vivid sense of place.
