Château Beychevelle is a historic estate nestled in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux, France. Often referred to as the "Versailles of the Médoc," the château is renowned for its stunning architecture and meticulously landscaped gardens. Founded in the 17th century, the estate earned its name from the practice of ships lowering their sails ("baisse voile") as a mark of respect for its owner, the Duke of Épernon. Today, it is co-owned by the Castel and Suntory groups, who uphold its legacy of producing elegant, balanced wines.
The Saint-Julien appellation is located on the left bank of the Gironde estuary in the Médoc region of Bordeaux. Known for its temperate maritime climate, Saint-Julien experiences mild winters and warm, sunny summers, with the Gironde providing a moderating influence. This region is celebrated for its gravelly soils, which ensure excellent drainage and promote deep vine rooting. Saint-Julien is often considered the epitome of balance in Bordeaux wines, producing reds that harmonize power, structure, and finesse.
Château Beychevelle’s vineyards span 90 hectares, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The terroir benefits from well-drained gravel soils over a subsoil of clay and limestone, ideal for producing wines with complexity and ageability. The proximity to the Gironde estuary creates a unique microclimate that protects the vines from frost and encourages consistent ripening.
