Founded in 1854 by Eugène Raspail, Domaine Raspail-Ay is a historic estate in Gigondas, Southern Rhône. Today, it is managed by Dominique Ay, a descendant of the founder, who continues the family's legacy of producing traditional, full-bodied wines. The estate spans 19 hectares, all in a single block, allowing for consistent vineyard management and wine production.
Gigondas is located at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, a series of rugged limestone peaks that influence the region's microclimate. The area's Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot summers and the mistral wind, provides ideal conditions for grape cultivation. The vineyards' mid-slope position on clay-limestone terraces contributes to the wines' structure and complexity.
The estate's vineyards are planted primarily with Grenache, along with Syrah and Mourvèdre. The clay-limestone soils, combined with the influence of the Dentelles de Montmirail, result in wines that are rich, balanced, and expressive of their terroir.
