Founded in the 1950s by Pierre Gonon in the heart of Saint-Joseph, Domaine Pierre Gonon is now run by his sons Jean and Pierre. The estate gained recognition for preserving traditional winemaking methods and producing wines that reflect the authenticity of northern Rhône Syrah. Through restrained yields and classic vinification, the Gonon brothers have elevated the estate’s reputation, making it one of the most sought-after names in the appellation.
Saint-Joseph lies along the western bank of the Rhône River, spanning steep, terraced vineyards from Chavanay to Tournon-sur-Rhône. Domaine Pierre Gonon’s holdings are centered around Mauves, one of the historic villages of the appellation. This southern sector of Saint-Joseph offers a slightly warmer microclimate, enabling greater ripeness while retaining the hallmark structure of northern Rhône reds.
The estate’s vineyards are planted primarily on decomposed granite, known locally as “gore,” which imparts lift and mineral tension to the wines. The steep slopes ensure optimal drainage and sun exposure, fostering concentrated yet balanced fruit. Farming is conducted organically, with all harvesting done by hand, allowing the terroir to express itself through nuanced, age-worthy wines with a firm sense of place.
