Established in 1141 by Cistercian nuns, Clos de Tart is one of Burgundy's oldest and most storied estates. Remarkably, it has remained a monopole—entirely under single ownership—throughout its history, a rarity in the region. The Mommessin family acquired the estate in 1932, and in 2017, it was purchased by Groupe Artémis, owned by François Pinault.
The estate comprises 7.53 hectares of Grand Cru vineyards in Morey-Saint-Denis, bordered by Clos des Lambrays and Bonnes Mares. The vineyard's uniformity and singular ownership allow for a consistent and focused expression of its terroir.
Clos de Tart's vineyards are characterized by a mix of marl and limestone soils, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the wines' structure and minerality. The site's east-facing slopes and elevation facilitate optimal sun exposure and temperature variation, essential for the development of complex and age-worthy Pinot Noir.
