Lots of violets, blackberries, bark and iodine. Oyster shell. Full-bodied. Firm and velvety tannins with a long and satisfying finish. Juicy and reserved at the end. Chewy and soft. Needs time to open. First growth. 72% cabernet sauvignon, 24% merlot and 4% cabernet franc. Drink after 2030.

The 2020 Le Petit Mouton De Mouton Rothschild showed beautifully and is certainly up with the top second wines out there. In fact, it’s better than the Grand Vins of many châteaux. Mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, aged 18 months in 50% new French oak, it offers a rich, powerful, concentrated, and medium to full-bodied style as well as ample darker currant and cassis fruits, some tobacco and spicy oak, a great mid-palate, and outstanding length on the finish. It’s approachable today yet will benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and evolve for at least two decades.

Smells wonderful, perfumed, herbal, milk chocolate, ripe blackberries, cherries and blackcurrants, quite soft and a tad shy but you get a sense of fullness on the nose. Supple, beautifully balanced and textured, round but direct, it’s not overt or too big but just settles in the right places. Really elegant and classy, just so easy to enjoy moving from start to finish with persistence and confidence. It's not trying too hard and nothing feels pushed with an overall gorgeous tetue, weight, balance, and push still with excellent acidity, ripe fruits and an element of minerality that cleans the tongue. Sharp, serious and long. A great wine that's a joy to taste.

The Estate

Château Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild is the second wine of the legendary First Growth estate Château Mouton Rothschild, located in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux, France. Introduced in 1993, Le Petit Mouton is produced from younger vines and plots that do not meet the exacting standards for the grand vin. Despite its status as a second wine, Le Petit Mouton has gained significant recognition for its quality and style, often rivaling many châteaux's primary offerings. The wine typically follows a similar blend to its elder sibling, predominantly featuring Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and sometimes small amounts of Cabernet Franc.

Historic Heat Tests Vines

Extreme summer heat in Pauillac drove one of the earliest harvests in Mouton's history. The second wine benefited from the estate's deep gravel soils, which provided crucial water reserves during severe drought conditions. The wine reflects the vintage's solar intensity while maintaining Mouton's signature gravelly mineral profile.

Gravel Soils Fight Rain

The estate's elevated plateau and deep gravel soils provided essential drainage during the challenging growing season, particularly benefiting younger vines selected for the second wine. Early harvest decisions and precise sorting proved crucial for maintaining quality. The wine shows Mouton's hallmark cedar and cassis character while delivering approachable Pauillac structure.

Early Picking Preserves Freshness

The western Pauillac plots benefited from cooling maritime influences during the summer heat, while early morning harvesting preserved aromatic freshness. The estate's younger vines on the gravel-rich plateau showed remarkable adaptation to the warm conditions. The wine displays concentrated dark fruits, tobacco leaf, and mineral notes that reflect its noble terroir and heritage.

Elegance Triumphs Over Adversity

The 2021 growing season at Château Mouton Rothschild was marked by spring frosts, a cool and wet summer, and increased disease pressure. Despite these challenges, the estate's meticulous vineyard management and rigorous selection process ensured only the best fruit made it into Le Petit Mouton. The well-drained gravelly soils of Pauillac played a crucial role in maintaining quality, contributing to the wine's characteristic elegance and structure.
