Founded in 1978 by Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler, Kistler Vineyards emerged with the ambition to produce Burgundian-style Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs in California. Their dedication to single-clone, single-vineyard expressions set a new standard for Californian winemaking. In 2008, Bill Price acquired a stake in the winery, and Jason Kesner joined as assistant winemaker, eventually taking over full production responsibilities in 2017.
Located in Sonoma County, Kistler Vineyards benefits from the region's cool climate and diverse terroirs. The proximity to the Pacific Ocean provides cooling influences, essential for the development of nuanced and balanced wines.
The estate's vineyards are characterized by a range of soil types, including sandy loam and volcanic ash, which contribute to the complexity of the wines. Meticulous vineyard management and minimal intervention in the winery allow the unique characteristics of each site to shine through in the final bottlings.
