Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s origins trace back to the 13th century, when the vineyard now known as Romanée-Conti was tended by the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Vivant. It changed hands through prominent Burgundian nobility before being acquired in 1760 by Prince Louis François de Bourbon, who appended the name "Conti" to the vineyard. After the French Revolution, the domaine passed into civilian ownership, and by the late 19th century, it was co-owned by the Duvault-Blochet family, who began consolidating adjacent grand cru holdings. In 1942, the de Villaine and Leroy families became co-directors, ushering in a modern era defined by careful vineyard stewardship, restrained yields, and an unyielding commitment to site transparency. Today, Aubert de Villaine and Perrine Fenal continue this legacy, maintaining the domaine’s status as Burgundy’s most revered and sought-after estate.
Situated in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, Romanée-Conti lies just below the slope of La Romanée, flanked by Richebourg and La Tâche. Its privileged position in Vosne-Romanée—where air flow, altitude, and exposition converge—contributes to the vineyard’s reputation for producing Pinot Noir with both aromatic depth and structural longevity.
The Romanée-Conti parcel covers just 1.81 hectares of iron-rich, limestone-clay soils over fractured rock. Vines average over 50 years of age, farmed biodynamically to preserve the integrity of the site. The resulting wine is known for its layered minerality, fine tannins, and ability to translate the nuance of vintage and soil with remarkable clarity.
