Established in 1874 in Gigondas, Domaine Santa Duc has been a family-run estate for six generations. Under the stewardship of Yves Gras since 1985, the domaine gained international recognition for its powerful yet elegant wines. Yves introduced biodynamic practices and expanded the estate's holdings into Châteauneuf-du-Pape. His son, Benjamin Gras, took over in 2016, continuing the family's commitment to producing wines that reflect the unique terroirs of the southern Rhône Valley.
Gigondas, located at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, is known for its rugged terrain and diverse soils. The region's Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot summers and the mistral wind, provides ideal conditions for grape cultivation. Domaine Santa Duc's vineyards are situated in prime locations within Gigondas and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, allowing them to craft wines that are both expressive and reflective of their specific vineyard sites.
The estate's vineyards are planted on a variety of soils, including sandy red clay with small limestone pebbles, which contribute to the wines' complexity and minerality. Notably, the La Crau Ouest vineyard features old vine Grenache planted in sand and clay terroir, resulting in wines with finesse and depth. The combination of soil composition, vine age, and biodynamic practices ensures that each wine authentically expresses its terroir.
