The 2019 Luigi Tecce Poliphemo Viti Vecchie Taurasi opens with intense aromas of black plum, dried rose, incense, and crushed volcanic rock. On the palate, it’s dense and savory, layering wild blackberry, iron, leather, and bitter cherry. A complex, brooding Aglianico with wild energy and deep, old-vine concentration.

Luigi Tecce is a fourth-generation winemaker based in Paternopoli, Campania, carrying on a family legacy deeply rooted in Aglianico cultivation. After the unexpected death of his father in the late 1990s, Tecce left a career in Naples to return home and manage the estate. His hands-on, artisanal approach is centered around small production and traditional methods, including spontaneous fermentations and extended macerations in chestnut casks. Tecce’s wines reflect both ancestral intuition and a personal, expressive style that has earned increasing recognition among Italy’s natural wine circles.
The estate lies in the Taurasi DOCG zone of Irpinia, a mountainous subregion of Campania in southern Italy. This area is known for its cooler temperatures and high-altitude vineyards, offering a stark contrast to the coastal warmth often associated with the region. Paternopoli itself is among the highest and most isolated communes in Taurasi, giving Tecce’s wines a distinct identity within the broader appellation. The climate allows for a longer growing season, which contributes to the deep structure and longevity of his Aglianico-based wines.
Luigi Tecce cultivates old-vine Aglianico across roughly four hectares of ungrafted vineyards, some planted over 80 years ago. The soils are composed of volcanic ash, clay, and calcareous components, which lend both mineral tension and depth to the wines. Elevation ranges from 500 to 600 meters, creating strong diurnal shifts that enhance aromatic complexity while preserving acidity. Tecce’s minimal intervention philosophy is inseparable from the land, yielding wines that are earthy, powerful, and transparent to vintage and site.
