The Philipponnat family has a long history in the region, with roots dating back to the 16th century. The modern house was established in 1910 by Pierre Philipponnat, and today it is run by Charles Philipponnat, representing the 16th generation of the family in Champagne. The estate is known for producing elegant and powerful Champagnes, with a particular focus on Pinot Noir.
Philipponnat's vineyards are primarily situated in the Montagne de Reims and the Grande Vallée de la Marne, two prestigious subregions of Champagne. These areas are renowned for their high-quality Pinot Noir grapes, which form the backbone of many Philipponnat cuvées. The Montagne de Reims is known for its north-facing slopes and cooler microclimates, while the Grande Vallée de la Marne benefits from a slightly warmer climate and south-facing exposures. Together, these regions provide a diverse range of terroirs for Philipponnat to work with.
The crown jewel of Philipponnat's terroir is the Clos des Goisses, a 5.5-hectare walled vineyard with a unique microclimate. This steep, south-facing slope overlooking the Marne River is one of the warmest sites in Champagne, allowing for exceptional ripeness in the grapes. The soil here is predominantly chalk with a thin layer of topsoil, contributing to the intense minerality and power found in wines from this site. Philipponnat's commitment to expressing terroir is evident in their single-vineyard Champagnes, particularly those from Clos des Goisses, which are known for their richness, complexity, and ability to age gracefully.
