Richard Leroy, a former Parisian banker, transitioned to winemaking in the mid-1990s, establishing his estate in Rablay-sur-Layon, within the Anjou region of the Loire Valley. He focuses exclusively on Chenin Blanc, producing two cuvées: "Les Noëls de Montbenault" and "Clos des Rouliers." Leroy is renowned for his commitment to organic viticulture and minimal intervention in the cellar, allowing the purity of his fruit and the character of his terroir to shine through. His meticulous approach has garnered him a reputation as one of the leading figures in the natural wine movement.
Anjou, located in the western Loire Valley, is characterized by its diverse soils and favorable climate for Chenin Blanc cultivation. The region has become a hub for natural winemaking, with producers like Leroy leading the charge. The area's combination of schist soils and a temperate climate contributes to the production of wines with pronounced minerality and vibrant acidity.
Leroy's vineyards are situated on schistous soils, which impart a distinctive mineral character to his wines. He employs organic farming practices, avoiding synthetic chemicals and emphasizing soil health. In the cellar, fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, and the wines are aged in neutral oak barrels to preserve their varietal expression.
