The deep garnet colored 2010 Angélus is an atomic bomb of powerful fruit scents from the moment the cork is pulled! Boysenberries, stewed plums, blackcurrant cordial and black raspberries all burst from the glass, followed up by nuances of tar, star anise, mocha and unsmoked cigars plus a waft of camphor. The big, rich, full-bodied palate is built like a brick house, featuring super firm, ripe, grainy tannins and tons of freshness to support the taut, muscular black fruits, finishing very long and savory. It's starting to enter its drinking window, but based on this tasting, I would recommend waiting another 3-5 years before broaching and then drinking it over the next 40+ years.

The nose is impressively rich with an opulence and sexiness with earth, berry, spice and chocolate character. Black truffles! Full body, with seamless tannins and beautiful richness. It goes on for minutes. The layers of fruit and ripe tannins are phenomenal. This is the greatest Angelus ever for me. Try in 2018.

Got patience? You'll need it to wait this brute out fully. A chunk of tar sits between you and the core of black currant, hoisin sauce and roasted Black Mission fig fruit flavors, while the back end is a road-paving machine laying down a smoldering tarry track of tobacco and freshly ground coffee. And there's an iron note too, as if this needed it. One of the most backward wines of the vintage. Best from 2017 through 2040. 8,750 cases made.

The Estate

Located in Saint-Émilion, Château Angélus derives its name from the vineyard's location, where winemakers could hear the bells of the Mazerat chapel and the churches of Saint-Émilion and Saint-Martin simultaneously ringing the Angelus. Recognized worldwide as one of the flagship estates of the Saint-Émilion appellation, this domaine has been under the leadership of the de Boüard de Laforest family for eight generations. In 2012, Château Angélus joined the iconic Château Cheval Blanc and Château Ausone in the new classification, thus reaching the very exclusive elite of the Saint-Emilion appellation with the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé A.

Slow-Ripened Sublimity

Early growth was followed by slow ripening due to August and early September weather, preserving freshness and aging potential. Healthy, perfectly ripe grapes allowed for meticulous harvesting. The resulting wines are dense with vibrant fruit aromas and subtle toasty notes, offering balance and elegant freshness.

Deep-Garnet Perfection

These wines exhibit a deep, inky black color. Their nose reveals fresh, ripe fruit aromas that avoid any hint of jamminess. The bouquet is dominated by pure notes of red cherries, raspberries, and blackberries. On the palate they display lovely concentration with substance, but are in no way heavy. Their silky tannins balance perfectly with their supple richness. These wines are powerful and concentrated, but velvet smooth and subtle too.

Cool Nights Shape Balance

Perfect summer conditions and cool nights allowed for steady ripening across the estate's clay-limestone slopes and côtes. The old vines, particularly Cabernet Franc in the natural amphitheater, reached optimal maturity under clear autumn skies. The wine displays profound black fruits, graphite, and limestone notes with remarkable tension between power and freshness.
