Tenuta San Guido, established in the 1940s by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, is renowned for producing Sassicaia, a pioneering Super Tuscan wine. Initially crafted for personal consumption, Sassicaia's first commercial vintage in 1968 marked a significant shift in Italian winemaking. The estate's commitment to quality and innovation led to Sassicaia receiving its own DOC designation, Bolgheri Sassicaia, in 1994—the only Italian wine to achieve this distinction.
Located in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, Tenuta San Guido benefits from a unique microclimate influenced by the Tyrrhenian Sea and the surrounding hills. This environment provides ideal conditions for cultivating Bordeaux varietals, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, which are central to Sassicaia's blend.
The estate's vineyards are characterized by gravelly soils, reminiscent of Bordeaux's Graves region, contributing to the wine's structure and complexity. Meticulous vineyard management and traditional winemaking techniques, including aging in French oak barrels, result in wines that are both elegant and expressive of their terroir.
