Marie-Noëlle Ledru became the sixth-generation caretaker of her family’s holdings in Ambonnay in 1984, and for decades she crafted some of the most focused and sought-after Champagnes in the Montagne de Reims. Known for working alone in both the vines and the cellar, Ledru made wines that were rigorous, pure, and free from excess. By 2017, she had retired from winemaking and leased much of her vineyard land, but her legacy endures in the small cache of vintages she left behind.
Ambonnay is one of Champagne’s most hallowed Grand Cru villages, sitting on the southern face of the Montagne de Reims and known primarily for its Pinot Noir. The vineyards here face due south and rest on deep chalk beds, producing wines of both power and tension. The microclimate is marginally warmer than nearby Verzenay or Bouzy, and that extra degree of ripeness gives Ambonnay wines a core of red fruit and muscularity.
Ledru’s estate comprised roughly 6 hectares, split between Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, all farmed without herbicides or synthetic inputs. Her parcels in Ambonnay—especially those near Les Crayères and Les Tourettes—sit on classic Campanian chalk, which provides verticality and mineral detail to her wines. Ledru harvested by hand, vinified in enamel tanks, and bottled with minimal dosage, resulting in wines that express the chalk, the fruit, and nothing else.
