The estate had just been bought the year before by the Freys, taking over from René Chayou, owner of Ayala Champagne - although Caroline Frey arrived a few years later. Significantly higher Merlot than in today's La Lagune, and planted on the gravel outcrops that the Freys quickly replanted to Cabernet Sauvignon. At 21 years old this still has elegance, but it is soft on the finish, and a little underpowered. The emphasis is on tobacco and soft raspberry notes, touches of smoke that are a signature of the estate, and it is extremely drinkable. Audience award in the masterclass along with the 2016 vintage.
