Thierry Germain relocated to the Loire from Bordeaux in the early 1990s and quickly transformed Domaine des Roches Neuves into one of the most important estates in the Saumur region. Inspired by the biodynamic principles of Nicolas Joly, Germain converted his 28 hectares to biodynamics in 2000 and has since developed a reputation for creating deeply expressive, transparent wines. With a background in viticulture and an obsession with site specificity, Germain has made the domaine synonymous with elegance, vitality, and a Burgundian sensitivity to place.
Saumur and Saumur-Champigny are located in the central Loire Valley, marked by a unique combination of tuffeau limestone bedrock, cool-climate conditions, and complex topography. These appellations specialize in Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc, both of which thrive in the region’s soils and benefit from long, slow ripening periods. The wines from this region have historically been rustic, but Germain's work helped usher in a more nuanced, terroir-focused style.
The domaine's vineyards sit on chalky slopes with thin topsoil, forcing the vines to dig deep and resulting in wines with mineral drive and precision. Germain works with multiple single parcels—such as “La Marginale,” “Clos de l’Echelier,” and “L’Insolite”—each treated individually in both vineyard and cellar. All grapes are harvested by hand at full physiological ripeness, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and aged in large-format oak or concrete eggs to preserve purity. His Cabernet Francs show a floral, silken profile with graphite precision, while his Chenin Blancs are crystalline, textured, and capable of decades in bottle.
